PGG Wrightson Wool Supports the ‘Wool in Schools’ Initiative

Here at PGG Wrightson Wool, we recognise the importance of wool and its relevance to the future. We have paired up with The Campaign for Wool to create an educational initiative called Wool in Schools. Through this initiative, mobile "Wool Sheds" travel across New Zealand, visiting primary and intermediate schools to educate children about the wonders of wool.

There are two specially designed Wool Sheds that travel New Zealand. These converted shipping containers are packed to the brim with wool resources and activity planners, providing an immersive learning experience for students. The Wool Sheds travel across the North and South Islands, spending one to two weeks at each school during term time.

The Wool Shed offers a range of activities that encourage active participation and hands-on learning. From understanding the wool production process to exploring innovative thinking, design, and technology, children are exposed to various parts of the wool industry. They learn about the journey of wool, from shearing the sheep to transforming the fibre into finished products. Through interactive demonstrations students gain practical skills and knowledge while having fun!

The Wool in Schools initiative provides comprehensive workbooks to teachers before the arrival of the Wool Shed. These workbooks contain a wealth of information and activity ideas, tailored to different primary age groups. The resources cater to various subjects, including science, technology, mathematics, economics, history, English, and art. This ensures that students can explore the qualities of wool from multiple angles, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation of the fibre.

Wool in Schools aims to instil in primary school children an understanding of wool's importance in our lives and its potential for the future. By familiarising students with this sustainable and versatile natural fibre, the initiative highlights the value of wool in various industries, from fashion to interior design and insulation. Educating young minds about wool's unique properties and the environmental benefits it offers contributes to a more sustainable and conscious society.

PGG Wrightson Wool takes great pride in supporting this initiative, recognising the significance of educating the younger generation about the wonders of wool. As a company heavily involved in the wool industry, we understand the importance of creating awareness and fostering an appreciation for this natural fibre. By engaging with school children, we aim to inspire a shift away from synthetic fibres and towards sustainable, locally sourced wool. We hope to build a connection with New Zealand wool growers to future generations, creating a generation of consumers who actively support and value the efforts of local wool producers.
