Over The Farm Gate: Go-Stock client holds successful on-farm lamb sale in Fairlie

Buyers and sellers benefit from flexible cashflow solution

A mid-March South Canterbury on farm lamb sale illustrated the effectiveness of Go-Stock, PGG Wrightson’s flexible solution for on-farm cashflow.

Hamish Orbell owns and farms 4100 hectare Clayton Station, a Fairlie Basin property farming deer, cattle and sheep that has been in his family for several generations. Clayton Station has used Go-Stock for six years, generally to manage cash flow during the times of the year when it can be tight, using the initiative for cattle and deer as well as sheep.

Go-Stock Business Development Manager Jess Davies was on-hand to support the Clayton Station sale.

“Clayton Station has not had an on farm lamb sale for several years. With the sun shining after their first fresh snow on the hills a couple of days prior, Clayton had over 6000 lambs on offer. This was an excellent event that drew buyers from Mid and South Canterbury, mainly cropping farmers.

“Lambs offered included halfbreds, Romney wethers and ewe lambs, and mixed sex black face lambs. Ewe lambs topped the sale with some pens selling at over $130 per head with the average over all the lambs finishing at $108 per head.

“Around 4000 of the 6000 lambs Clayton Station offered were on Go-Stock, around 1000 of which sold back onto Go-Stock contracts through other Mid Canterbury farmers,” she says.

Cameron Gray of PGG Wrightson Livestock, Fairlie organised the sale and said its success suggested resuming it as an annual event.

“Clayton Station did a superb job presenting the lambs. All were crutched and we received several compliments on how good they looked. Go-Stock is a great tool for Clayton Station and it enabled them to hold onto their lambs until sale day without feeling stretched. It also enabled more buyers to bid and buy, therefore benefiting the sale and enabling Hamish and his team to achieve the best results,” he says.
