Over The Farm Gate: Demand solid at South Island lamb sales

Schedule and feed availability motivating buyers, and keeping vendors satisfied

South Island lamb sales are the main focus for the month of January.

Over 40,000  South Island lambs were sold in the week of 10 January, mainly at on farm sales. Confidence in the processing schedules, and plenty of feed throughout all regions has resulted in solid demand, with prices in excess of $4 per kilogram for the store lambs, depending on weight.

One feature sale, at Orari Gorge Station, South Canterbury, achieved a clearance of 94 per cent of the approximately 4700 lambs offered.

Overall, vendors have been satisfied with the sale results.

South Island store lamb sales will continue through January, to be followed by ewe fairs.
