Full clearance at large South Canterbury on-farm cattle sale

Opawa Downs, Albury, puts up 600 Simmental-Herefords to enthusiastic response

Early in October 2400 hectare Albury, South Canterbury farm Opawa Downs put up 600 Simmental-Hereford cross cattle at the property’s fifth annual on-farm sale, which resulted in a full clearance.

Opawa Simmentals’ owners David and Jayne Timperley emphasise the hybrid vigour their cattle, focusing on producing animals that will thrive in any commercial situation, on the basis of placid temperament, ease of calving, and good growth rates.

This was a large on-farm sale, utilising three sets of yards across three different parts of the farm to accommodate the various groups of cattle on offer. Plenty of returning buyers attended, the prices were competitive, and the purchasers went away happy.

Opawa Downs top Simmental-Hereford steers fetched $1630 (448 kilograms) with a second cut making $1540 (422 kilograms) while the top Simmental cross heifers sold up to $1260 (377 kilograms).
